Power Tour 2007
Tuesday, May 18
Tulsa, OK to Station Casino, Kansas City, MO

“Kansas City, Here I Come”

How far will people travel to be part of the Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour? Take a look at the rear window on this van.

“UK — LA — NASHVILLE — UK”

Oklahoma’s rural two lane Highway 169.

Everywhere we look, local residents stare in amazement at our 1959 Sedan Delivery. At a stop sign in Nowata, Gary and I hear one guy say to his friend, “Look! I’ve seen that car in the magazines.”

He’s right. Our Sedan Delivery has appeared in: Custom Rodder, Popular Hot Rodding, Car Audio, Street Customs and more recently, July’s Super Chevy. Also pending, a Gray Baskerville feature for Hot Rod Magazine.

Though technically a gas stop, Coffeyville, Kansas goes all out to make us feel appreciated. As we cruise slowly through town, people from all over come out to cheer us on. It doesn’t matter that it is the middle of the work day.

Coffeyville doesn’t seem to move at the same speed we do. It moves only as fast as it needs to. There’s something special about this town. I wish we could stay awhile. . .

Outside the city limits, huge trucks dominate the rural highway.

Without a doubt, these guys win the official Mothers® Grand Prize for mind-numbing, painfully slow driving. Naturally, every time we stop for gas, they end up. . .

. . . right in front of us.

What does it say on this van’s tailgate — just above the rear bumper?

Only in Kansas City.

Drive thru lumberyard? Wow.

Finally we arrive at the Station Casino, Kansas City, Missouri.

A rare 1971 Challenger 426 Hemi Convertible.

An ultra-rare, Krylon Dohickey 2000 with custom Stemple Remple Flares (OK, it was worth a shot).

Say hello to my remote controlled, Oscar Meyer weiner-mobile. At the wheel, my good buddy, Jack.

Jack decides to enter the weiner-mobile in Holley’s “Dyno Challenge” contest.

.0005 horse power at 6000 RPM (revolutions per millennium). Sweet!!!

“Hey Jack, nice wheels. But who’s the clown with the remote?”

From left to right; your Power Tour guide, Ken Holland, Jack and his “Hot Dogs by Floyd” weiner-mobile, and my old friend, Petersen’s Events Sales Manager, Catherine Girard-Cobb.

That’s it. My coverage of this year’s Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour West is over. Forrest Tosie picks up tomorrow with his exciting “Day-Off” coverage (I don’t know why he insists on writing about “Day-Off,” since it is — after all — a day off). Hopefully he’ll refrain from ending his Power Tour coverage with his heart-stopping, action-packed TWA flight home to St. Louis.

Hopefully. . .
